Evolution of Regluing : Process Spin vs Product Spin

For lack of better terms (unless you can think of better ones)

I will call these Product Spin & Process Spin.

Product Spin was introduced to TT in late 70's & early 80's

by creation of so-called super spin rubbers.

These rubbers have extremely sticky top sheets.

Some of them were also extremely soft top sheets increasing the

dwell time (the time that the ball stays on the racket).

Examples :- TSP 730 , Double Happiness 777

Butterfly Tackiness Chop

However there were 2 major disadvantages

1. The softness greatly limited the speed

2. Any top sheet that produces heavy spin will also

react 'violently" to heavy spin.

These problems were partially addressed by rubbers such as

Yasaka DO , Friendship 729 , Globe 999 ...............these

rubbers have sticky top sheets but the top sheet is also much harder

than 777 or 730., but not as well as the new solution

.......process spin.

In product spin , the spin is built in mostly by design of

product (this is of course speaking relatively).

In process spin, you are using the "process" of regluing

to create enormous spin.

However, in process spin, you are creating the spin almost

exclusively by the process (of regluing) & sponge & very little

(again speaking relatively of course) by the top sheet. The top

sheets of rubbers like Sriver & mark V are almost ANTI compared

to 730 or even 999. However you can still create enormous spins

similar to 730, but with two other advantages

1. Speed is significantly higher , like shooting from a slingshot

2. Control is also increased but both due to higher dwell times as

well as an ANTI (a dramatic exaggeration , no offense to ASTI

intended) like top sheet which does not react to opponents'

spin like a 730 or even 999 would do.

The concepts of increasing all three factors :- speed , spin &

control does sound far fetched at first , I myself thought this

was a joke ,until I reglued myself & saw the benefits.

This is also one of the knocks against regluing, because it

seems like the rubber does all the work (skill is optional)

especially given the enormous speeds created by the

sling shot effect of regluing.

I am not aware of any top offensive player who does NOT reglue.

Even myself, a much lower level player , find that it is lot more

beneficial to reglue the spinny rubbers I use such as Do or

999 even though I use only a thin rubber (1.2 mm to 1.5 mm) . I also

find it advantageous to reglue even the longpips ( when it has sponge

......regardless of how thin or thick).
